We still have vacant chair positions and we need your help.  There are a variety of ways to volunteer, with something to fit everyone's interests and schedule.  No experience required, many positions do not require you to attend PTA meetings (although we hope you will!) and many are flexible and can be done completely or mostly at home. Please consider volunteering for one of these positions.  Contact info@orangehunt.pta.org to volunteer or with any questions.

Spelman Crosswalk Update

4/28/2017 10:30 pm

Due to multiple near misses this year at the Spelman and Huntsman crosswalk, we have created a Safety Committee whose goal is to make crossing this section of road safe for our students and parents.

The following changes have been made recently:

  • The crosswalk has been repainted
  • Slow Down signs with orange flags at the crosswalk.
  • Temporary placement of FCPD flashing pedestrian sign along Huntsman Blvd.

The traffic division has been informed of the lack of enforcement of the 25 mph speed and the no parking area along Huntsman Blvd immediately before the crosswalk. Officers will be out at least once a week from now until the end of the school year writing tickets. Parents who habitually use the no parking zone to pick up and drop off their children will be noted.

In order to get permanent crossing assistance installed at the crosswalk, we need to collect data about the speed of drivers along Huntsman Blvd. We will be collecting signatures on a petition to conduct a speed study. We encourage you to sign this form, which will allow the committee to move forward with a study of the street. Please contact the committee with any questions or concerns. If you are interested in helping this committee, please contact Keli Jacewitz at kjacewitz@gmail.com. If you see a dangerous situation or are involved in one yourself, please notify the committee so that we can keep track of the types of encounters between pedestrians and cars.

Full details and the latest updates can be found on the Safety section of the PTA website.

Volunteers Needed - Take Home Reading Program

3/31/2017 2:13 pm

Volunteers are needed to maintain the K-2 take home carts. We need one person each day of the week to straighten up the book carts that are housed in the hallway outside of the K-2nd grade classrooms. This includes these items:

  • Making sure the colored dots are on the books. If a dot is missing, pull the book so it can be labeled correctly.
  • If a book is too worn looking, pull it from the cart.
  • Place the books so that the biggest books are in the back and the smallest books are in the front.
  • Make sure the titles of the books are facing the front.
  • Make sure each book is in the correct place according to the colored dots. (red dot books should be put together, blue dots should be together, etc.) This is important because children get books that are on their reading level by looking in the slot with a colored dot their teacher specifies.
  • Clean out any trash that is in the carts and throw it away.
  • Children choose books in the morning, so volunteers are needed after 10:00 a.m.

If you have any questions or to volunteer, please contact Lib Bryant, Reading Specialist, at ecbryant@fcps.edu.

Thank you!
